Introduction

In analysing the most important events and trends recently registered in the Latin American economy, the present Economic Survey brings to light the relatively favourable evolution of the economic situation in most of the countries of the region during 1964. By virtue of the improvement in world market prices for primary products, the real value of exports increased, and this in turn helped to raise income and consumption levels and facilitated internal efforts to expand investment. The process was also influenced by the high level of external financing in many Latin American countries, largely attributable to foreign financial assistance programmes.
