Disasters and crises do not just have immediate, short-term effects on people’s lives and livelihoods. They can destroy livelihoods that have taken generations to build. Decades of marginalization and environmental degradation, exacerbated by recurrent shocks driven by climate change and conflict undermine people’s ability to cope with the next stressor, for example turning a dry spell into a major humanitarian crisis.
