Food and agricultural developments in Africa south of the Sahara

FAO has published several studies of food and agricultural developments in the Far East, Latin America, and the Near East, but this chapter is its first review of the over-all situation in Africa, the fOurth of the major economically underdeveloped regions. The chapter is confined to Africa South of the Sahara, for although this region is far from homogeneous it presents less diversity than the continent taken as a whole. It is intended as a preliminary review of the whole field of postwar food and agricultural developments in this vast region and it is therefore not possible to include more than. the briefest account of many important problems. It is hoped, however, that this summary will bring out the main similarities and differences between the food and agricultural situation and problems of Africa South of the Sahara and those of the other underdeveloped regions and will help to focus attention on the many questions requiring further study.
