Community partnerships in primary health care for mothers, newborns and children

When infants and children become sick, it is their families, especially parents and other primary caregivers, who form the first line of care. Household members, particularly mothers, undertake the primary diagnosis of illness, assess the severity and probable outcomes, select treatment and care options – including home treatment – and procure and administer drugs and other remedies. Families and caregivers make the decisions to seek formal health care for pregnant women or children who have fallen ill, and they decide whether to adopt diverse feeding and hygiene practices.
