Population

In 1999, the General Assembly held its twentyfirst special session to consider progress in implementing the Programme of Action adopted by the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development. The year of that five-year review, known as ICPD+5, also saw the day of 6 billion—12 October—when it was estimated that the 6 billionth baby was born. A third population milestone in 1999 was the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the largest internationally funded source of population assistance and the lead United Nations organization for advancing the ICPD Programme of Action.
