Driving forces of labour migration in Asia

In terms of contemporary migration issues, what distinguishes Asia from other regions is the rapid growth of a market-led intra-regional migration system. Except for the long festering ethnic war in Sri Lanka, the region witnessed relatively few refugee-producing violent conflicts in the last decade. Asia featured two prominent events: the opening up to the global economy of two giant economies, China and India; and the financial crisis that put the brakes on the rapid growth of the “tiger” economies in South-East Asia.
