Implementation of the treaty on the non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons

The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, first opened for signature in 1968, entered into force on 5 March 1970. On that occasion, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, U Thant, welcoming the entry into force of the Treaty, stressed its importance as a means of containing the nuclear arms race.
