There has been a growing recognition in recent years that not only the absolute level, but the distribution, of a country’s national income is important in determining the welfare of the people of that country and that greater equality in the distribution of income is necessary to satisfy the requirements of social justice. This recognition has created a need for more information on the existing national distributions of income, on the determinants of the distribution of income, and on the relationship between income distribution and economic development in the countries of the ECAFE region. Such information is necessary for the formulation and implementation of policies conducive not only to attaining the target of economic growth but also to improving the conditions of social justice. It is to this major task that the present chapter seeks to make a preliminary contribution.
