The structural factors of Latin American development

Economic activities in Latin America as a whole showed relative improvement in 1964 and 1965, when the total gross product increased by 6.2 and 5 per cent. As was pointed out in the Economic Survey of 1965, this trend should be appraised in the light of the particular conditions in which it developed and past experience, which indicates that it might have been produced by a favourable combination of circumstances in a few countries rather than a generalized and permanent development pattern. Consequently, it is not surprising that the growth rate should have declined again in 1966 to about 3.1 per cent in aggregate terms, which means that the per capita product remained virtually the same.
