A reassuring feature among the developments in world agriculture in 1970 was the continued progress of rice and wheat production in the Far East, the world's most concentrated food deficit zone, as steadily increasing use was made of improved seed varieties. Total food production in that region again rose at a rate comfortably ahead of the population growth, and governments are taking measures to spread the new technology over still larger areas and to bring it to farmers who thus far have not been able to profit by it.
