Activities of the World Health Organization related to disarmament

In 1987 the WHO Management Group to study the effects of nuclear war on health and health services completed the second phase of work begun in this field in 1981. It will be recalled that an international committee of experts in medical sciences and public health had submitted a report to the World Health Assembly in 1983, which was published in 1984. The report concluded that it was not possible to prepare health services to deal in any systematic way with a catastrophe resulting from nuclear warfare or its aftermath.
