The population of Benin was estimated at 8 million persons in 2007. More than one third of the population lives below the poverty line set by Benin, suggesting that close to 50 percent lives below the dollar-a-day international poverty line as defined in MDG 1. The 2007/2008 UNDP Human Development Index, which measures average achievements in a country in three basic dimensions of human development (a long and healthy life, knowledge and a decent standard of living), ranks Benin at 163 out of 177 countries.
