In developing countries, there is an urgent need to reduce poverty and wage gaps by revitalizing the regional economy. This section describes the process of transferring Japanese initiatives for the local value-adding process, rehabilitating people’s cultural practices, and initiating self-reliance strategies such as the “One Village, One Product” (OVOP) movement, michinoeki (roadside service stations), and shokuiku (dietary education). These unique approaches provide an important model of success in regional development policy.
