In this section it is pointed out that country-based agricultural productivity, population density and economic productivity do not reflect the expected primary productivity of potential vegetation. This is not explained simply by overseas trade or by uneven economic development. Cereals, or seed grains of annual plants, require enduring fertile soil and are naturally adapted to extratropical ecosystems. Crops from perennial plants such as tree fruits, roots and tubers are adapted to tropical ecosystems. The geographical patterns of human population and society also reflect the properties of natural ecosystems. It is suggested that sustainable land use needs to be evaluated from the properties of natural ecosystems.
