Two aspects of social development have come to the fore in the developing countries of the region in recent years. The first, and perhaps the most prominent, is the need to achieve a more egalitarian distribution of economic wellbeing and especially the fruits of development. The implementation of policies to integrate women into the mainstream of productive activity is a part of this drive towards a more egalitarian society. The position of women in urban wage labour in manufacturing has been highlighted during the recent recession in most of the more developed developing countries of the region.
