BNUB (Burundi): Consolidating peace through political dialogue

At the end of October 2012, the Government of Burundi (with support from the United Nations, the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the European Union, and bilateral partners) organized a major conference in Geneva, bringing together all of Burundi’s development partners, to mobilize support for the implementation of its poverty reduction strategy. Though final figures are still to be confirmed, donors pledged more than $2.6 billion. In doing so, they commended the Government, and the people of Burundi, for their commitment to promoting good governance and strengthening the fight against poverty. This was the second year of impressive advances for Burundi in the World Bank’s “Doing Business” indicators, making Burundi Africa’s “Most Improved” for 2012, and, among the 10 countries globally deemed to have most improved in the same year — the only low-income country among the 10. Thanks to the efforts of the Office Burundais des Recettes, state revenues continued to increase dramatically from what was a very low base.
