In 1988, the world population reached 5.2 billion; the United Nations estimated that it would grow by more than 90 million each year during the 1990s, with more than 90 per cent of the growth taking place in the developing countries, where about one third of the population was homeless. The United Nations Population Fund had programmes and projects in 127 developing countries and continued to focus on the needs of 56 priority countries. At the end of 1988, the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements was carrying out 219 projects in 94 countries.
