United Nations efforts to advance the status of women and ensure their rights in 2000 centred on implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a comprehensive plan for women’s empowerment based on the goals of equality, development and peace, which was adopted at the Fourth (1995) World Conference on Women. In June, the General Assembly held its twenty-third special session to review progress in implementing the 12 critical areas of concern outlined in the Platform for Action.
