Foreword

Multiple crises in 2008 demanded immediate, concrete results from the United Nations. Severe economic recession challenged global solidarity and threatened to compromise efforts to combat climate change. A food crisis endangered the fight against poverty and hunger, putting at risk the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people. Natural disasters, most notably in China, Haiti and Myanmar, caused more than 235,000 deaths, affected some 214 million people, and resulted in an estimated $190 billion in economic damage—further exacerbating already dire humanitarian situations and placing the utmost strains on aid delivery and relief assistance.
