Increasing economic activities and the rapid growth in population have led to a significant effect on the growth of motor vehicles in the ESCAP region. Consequently, this has resulted in an upsurge in the numbers of road accidents in several countries within the region, particularly within metropolitan cities. Worldwide, road traffic takes the lives of nearly 1.3 million people every year, and injures 20-50 million more. According to the World Health Organization, road traffic fatalities are predicted to rise to become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030, resulting in an estimated 2.4 million fatalities per year.
