Peace operations and their priorities

The year Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon took office, 20 peacekeeping operations were deployed on four continents with roughly 100,000 personnel, including police and military, and another 27 special political missions around the world with over 2,000 personnel, ranging from special envoys to regional political offices, country-specific political missions and sanctions monitoring groups. Of these 47 peace operations, most had been mandated by the Security Council, though some had been authorized by the General Assembly, such as the Myanmar good offices and Syria special envoy roles, while others had been established under the Secretary-General’s own authority, including regional offices.
