Population and human settlements

At mid-1995, world population stood at 5.75 billion and, while the rate of growth was declining, world population was increasing by more than 86 million persons annually. During the year, UN bodies, particularly the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), continued to implement the Programme of Action adopted at the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development. UNFPA strengthened its collaborative and coordination efforts with its partner agencies and organizations within the UN system and with bilateral agencies and non-governmental organizations. The Fund’s population assistance expenditures in 1995 totalled some $311 million. By year’s end, 2,479 projects were being assisted. In December, the General Assembly urged all countries to consider their current spending priorities with a view to making additional contributions for the Programme of Action’s implementation.
