Promotion of human rights

In 1999, the United Nations continued its activities to promote and protect human rights through the Commission on Human Rights and its subsidiary body—the Subcommission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities, renamed in July the Subcommission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights proceeded with its increasing responsibilities in the United Nations system-wide, in national, regional and international coordination and implementation of human rights, and in the provision of advisory services and technical cooperation.
