Regional economic and social activities

In 1999, the five UN regional commissions continued efforts to promote the economic and social development of the countries in their areas. Four of them met for regular sessions during the year at their headquarters: the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia); the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) (Bangkok, Thailand); the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) (Geneva); and the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) (Beirut, Lebanon). The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), located in Santiago, Chile, did not meet in 1999, having held its most recent session in 1998. In observance of its twenty-fifth anniversary, ESCWA adopted the Beirut Declaration as a new vision of the Commission’s role and tasks, which was endorsed by the Economic and Social Council in July.
