United Nations staff

In 2001, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan (Ghana) was appointed for a second fiveyear term, effective 1 January 2002. In October, the Secretary-General and the United Nations were awarded the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize (see p. 46), which, according to the Security Council President, reflected the high esteem shared by people throughout the world for the Secretary-General and honoured his exceptional achievements and those of the United Nations itself
