The year 2011 marked thirty years since the hiv/aids epidemic was recognized. The June high-level meeting of the General Assembly on hiv/aids reviewed progress achieved in realizing the 2001 Declaration of Commitment and the 2006 Political Declaration on hiv/aids, and adopted a new political declaration on intensifying efforts to eliminate the disease.
