The new decade began with a painful reminder that the world may be moving away from finding a convincing collective answer to international security challenges. The first days of 2020 saw tensions in the Middle East region intensify to an even higher level, and the possibility of a serious retaliation loomed large. Many feared the outbreak of a large-scale military confrontation. Volatility persists, attesting to the reality that the international community is yet to find a fundamental breakthrough to the insecurity in the region.
