Central and Eastern Europe

The free elections of 1989-90 heralded a new era for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE)'. Parliamentary democracy was instituted on the basis of a multi-party system and the transition to a market economy began. Seven years on, society as a whole has been exposed to the positive and negative effects of this ongoing transition, which has permeated not only the economy but also such spheres as culture, education and science.
