Foreword

The year 2007 was marked by increasing demands on the United Nations, reflecting the centrality in world affairs of our work for peace, development and human rights. But it was also a year in which attacks on our peacekeeping and civilian personnel, including by terrorists on our premises in Algiers, underscored the dangers involved in carrying out this mission. Far from deterring us, these difficulties strengthened our resolve to live up to the ideals of the United Nations Charter.
