During the 1990s and the early 2000s, Asia Pacific least developed countries (LDCs) performed quite well in terms of economic growth. During 1990-2000, the annual average real GDP growth in these countries was 5.7 per cent. This compares favourably with the 4.9 per cent achieved by other developing countries. But in more recent years, the performance of the region’s LDCs has fallen behind other developing countries. In addition, looking beyond real GDP growth as an indicator of economic performance reveals several concerns.
