Globalization has ushered in unprecedented wealth as well as much illicit activity. Spurred by advances in communication, transportation and myriad other technologies, today’s globalized world faces new challenges. Many of these challenges – such as illicit trafficking of goods, people and weapons – have existed before. Others, like internet crime, are newly to the fore. In the networked world of the early twenty-first century, these activities are not easy to detect and curtail. Global “uncivil” society represents the dark side of globalization. How to overcome the global governance deficits that continue to facilitate its activities was the driving force behind this volume.
