Africa holds 59 per cent of the world’s platinum, 62 per cent of the aluminium silicate and over 50 per cent of the world’s share of diamonds. Southern Africa alone accounts for half of the world’s reserves of chromites, vanadiumites, manganese and gold. 93 Central Africa is endowed with oil, gas and other mineral resources that are the backbone of several national economies and that have contributed to dramatic economic growth, especially in Angola, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
