Activities of the Department for disarmament affairs and education and information for disarmament

Every year, the Department for Disarmament Affairs undertakes a large number of activities in fulfilment of standing and new mandates given to the Secretary-General by the General Assembly. This chapter covers a variety of areas: involvement in the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM): the disarmament studies programme; the global information programme, including the World Disarmament Campaign; the fellowship, training and advisory services programme; and the Regional Centres. The chapter also discusses action taken by the General Assembly under the item “Education and information for disarmament”. The chapter concludes with two annexes: annex I sets out the composition of the expert study groups and annex II is a compilation of intergovernmental and other meetings that the Department serviced and the publications that it produced in 1991.
