Latin America's gross domestic product increased in 1962 by something less than 3 percent. This figure is comparatively unfavorable, particularly with reference to the estimated figure for the preceding year (5.4 percent), and as against the rate of growth of the area's population. The latter rate has shown an increase during recent years, and it is estimated that during the period to which we are referring, that is the early part of this decade, it was approximately 2.9 percent. The per capita product did not increase in 1963 and it is even possible that it may have decreased slightly. If so, this will be the second year in which this happened since the beginning of the 1950's.
