Economic policy and planning in Latin America: Introduction

Little has been written on the economic policies pursued by the Latin American countries. The primary aim of research has been to shed light on development trends and characteristics, a field of study whose priority is unquestionable; and the analysis of the directives and instruments responsible for the orientation of development has been relegated to a secondary plane. Recent experience, however, clearly shows that the problems arising in this latter connexion have acquired exceptional importance with the spread of a determined intention on the part of these countries to promote more dynamic growth, within the framework of over-all development programmes. In order to fill the existing gap, it is planned to undertake a series of studies on the economic policies of the region, of which the first two are presented here.
