Current economic developments and policies in the countries of the ECAFE region

The economy of Afghanistan is predominantly agricultural. A severe drought in 1970/71 led to a sharp reduction in agricultural production, thus producing an adverse effect on the other sectors. Although weather conditions in the first half of 1972/73 continued to be not very favourable, agricultural production recovered because of countermeasures taken by the Government, including the distribution of fertilizers and high-yielding seeds at subsidized prices.
