The year 1978 was one of the most active in the history of the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO). During the 20 years since its establishment, IMCO became the world forum for technical matters concerned with the safety of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution from ships. The first World Maritime Day was celebrated on 17 March, the twentieth anniversary of IMCO.
