In 2004 the gross domestic product (GDP) of the Latin American and Caribbean region as a whole will grow by an estimated 4.5%, while per capita GDP should rise by about 3%. These will be the biggest increases posted in the region since 1997, the first year of the crisis that plagued the Asian countries in the late 1990s and dampened economic activity in Latin America and the Caribbean. These rates also represent a major improvement over the figures posted in 2003, when regional GDP rose by just 1.5%.
