In 2003, the protection of human rights-civil and political, as well as economic, social and cultural remained a major focus of UN activities. During the year, follow-up activities continued to be undertaken to implement the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action (DDPA) adopted at the 2001 World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, including the first meeting of the Intergovernmental Working Group established by the Economic and Social Council to make recommendations for effective implementation of DDPA and the first meeting of the five independent eminent experts appointed by the Secretary-General to follow up the implementation process.
