The progressive return to normal in the provision of the international services that are the hallmark of the Panamanian economy, along with a high level of investment, contributed to the sustained increase in economic activity (6%) in 1993, the fourth consecutive year in which per capita output rose substantially. The economy experienced virtually zero inflation and the fiscal deficit was almost entirely eliminated. During the year, however, there were several indications that the current expansionary phase, which had been sustained by the surge in capital formation associated with the process of rebuilding and urban renewal, was weakening.
