In most developing countries of the ESCAP region, favourable weather conditions exercised a decisive influence on the marked improvement in agricultural production in 1983, in contrast to the situation in 1982 when many countries were affected by drought and delayed monsoons. Changes in weather were, however, not uniform, nor were they the only factors responsible for the rise in production. Most of the gains in production were concentrated in the two major cereal crops, wheat and rice, with a consequent general improvement in the food security situation. The production of some of the less important food crops and non-food crops did not rise as fast. Among the latter, sugarcane was especially adversely affected by sluggish demand in world markets.
