While the emphasis of the present handbook is on the sampling aspects 1. of household surveys, it is necessary to provide an overview of household survey planning, operations and implementation in order to fit the chapters and sections on sampling into proper context. There are many textbooks, handbooks and manuals that deal, in considerable detail, with the subject of household survey planning and execution, to which the reader is urged to refer for more information. Many of the main points, however, are highlighted and briefly described in the present chapter including key features of planning and execution, except for sample designs and selection, which are discussed in chapters 3, 4 and annex I.
