United Nations Demographic Yearbook 1956

The 1956 Demographic Yearbook is the 8th in the series published by the Statistical Office of the United Nations. To complete the presentation of results of population censuses carried out between 1945 and 1955, this-like the 1955 issue-is a census reference volume. However, in this issue, particular attention is paid to ethnic and economic characteristics of the population, whereas the 1955 Yearbook covered chiefly geographic distribution, statistics of detailed age, marital status, literacy and measures of fertility.

The world demographic situation

It is of interest to everyone concerned with problems which depend upon population numbers to observe how the use of demographic statistics as primary data for the establishment of governmental policies is expanding throughout the world. Whether the governments aim at maintaining a high rate of employment, producing an acceleration of economic growth, or achieving certain social goals, the tendency is to resort to the use of statistics—rather than to limited personal experiences—as a basis for decisions.
