The ageing of the world’s population is one of the major achievements of modern society. Today, people live far longer than they did a century ago, reflecting advances in medicine, nutrition and technology. But ageing poses major challenges as well, and will be a dominant theme for development in the twenty-first century. By 2050, almost 2 billion people will be aged 60 years or over. Eighty per cent of them will live in developing countries.
