Human rights and justice

The recognition that long-term peace and security cannot exist without human rights for all, that sustainable development is impossible without peace and security, and that human rights are essential is at the bedrock of the work of the United Nations. This understanding of their basic relationship has driven the UN to reinforce its wide-ranging advocacy and defense of human rights. During the decade being covered, the appreciation of the linkages between the three pillars of the work of the Organization–peace and security, development, and human rights–gained new depth and clarity. One of the Secretary-General’s priorities has been to bring the three pillars together, and to use human rights as a compass. As he said early in his tenure: “I aim to be a bridge builder, give voice to the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people, and ensure that the United Nations delivers tangible, meaningful results that advance peace, development and human rights.” Throughout his time in office, he has emphasized the need for democratic practices, beginning with the right of people to be heard through the ballot box. He has spoken up repeatedly for the rights of all people, regardless of whatever distinction.
