Legal questions

On 21 December 1974 the International Court of Justice received a request from the General Assembly for an advisory opinion on two questions: (a) whether Western Sahara (Rio de Oro and Sakiet El Hamra) at the time of colonization by Spain was a territory belonging to no one (terra nullius), and (b) if not, what the legal ties were between that territory and the Kingdom of Morocco and the Mauritanian entity.
