International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) estimated total traffic of the world’s scheduled airlines to be close to 146 billion tonnekilometres during 1983, an increase of almost 6 per cent over 1982. The airlines carried over 780 million passengers at a load factor of 64 per cent, as in 1982. Air freight increased by 10 per cent to some 34 billion tonne-kilometres, the second highest annual increase during the past decade. Airmail traffic amounted to 4 billion tonnekilometres, an increase of about 4 per cent, close to the average rate of increase in 10 years.
