The Yearbook of the United Nations stands as the authoritative reference work on the activities and concerns of the Organization. Based on official UN documents, the Yearbook provides comprehensive coverage of political and security matters, human rights issues, economic and social questions, legal issues, and institutional, administrative and budgetary matters.

Development policy and international economic co-operation

Continuing instability in the world economy, particularly in exchange and interest rates, following the sudden decline in equity prices in October 1987 was a major subject of discussion in several United Nations bodies during 1988. An overall slow-down in growth of the global economy was predicted at the beginning of the year; modest prosperity was achieved instead, but it was highly uneven and major imbalances persisted, which most affected the debt-distressed developing countries where long-term improvements had already been interrupted by the severity of their economic problems.
