International Finance Corporation (IFC)

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), established in 1956, furthers economic growth in developing member countries by promoting private sector investment. It is a member of the World Bank Group, which also includes the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank), the International Development Association and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency However, IFC operates independently, with its own Articles of Agreement, shareholders, management, staff and financial structure. Its share capital is provided by its member countries, which collectively also determine its policies and activities. In addition, it raises most of the funds for its lending activities through bond issues in the international financial markets and from returns on profitable investments.
