International peace and security

The Organization’s activities in the maintenance of international peace and security were recognized by the award of the 1988 Nobel Peace Prize to the United Nations peace-keeping forces. At the time of the award, in September, the United Nations had nearly 10,000 peace-keeping forces and observers on duty in seven regions of the world.
